Dangers of DIY Orthodontics

23 May 2017 | 0 Comments

At Hamilton, Wilson & Hendrickson Orthodontics, we’re here to be your trusted choice when you’re looking for a children’s or adult orthodontist in or around Topeka or Lawrence. We’re proud to offer a variety of efficient and safe orthodontic treatments, including several types of braces and Invisalign. We always place the safety and health of our patients first, which is why when you have an orthodontic problem, you need to visit a qualified professional. We bring this up because we feel that it’s important to raise awareness about the dangers of an alarming new trend that’s been going on recently: do-it-yourself (DIY) orthodontics.

Why You Should Never DIY

After watching online videos of amateurs attempting to shift their teeth through primitive methods, many viewers of these videos believe that they too can become self-orthodontists. Through its promotion on social media sites like Youtube, DIY orthodontics has unfortunately soared to new heights in terms of popularity. In fact, the American Association of Orthodontists has reported that about 13 percent of its member orthodontists have seen patients who have tried to straighten their teeth on their own through DIY braces. In these cases of DIY braces, there are patients who have used rubber bands, dental floss, string, paper clips, and other household objects to try to perfect the alignment of their teeth.

It rarely ever ends well.

This is such a major problem because orthodontics is an incredibly complex field. The tools and techniques that orthodontists use are designed to exert a precise calibration of force onto a patient’s teeth. They require many different force levels and motions in order to guarantee the safety of a patient’s teeth, gums, and mouth. DIY methods of straightening teeth just can’t match this precision. What ends up happening is that a patient can damage his or her teeth and even possibly cause them to loosen or fall out. What starts as an attempt to save a few thousand dollars generally ends up with a person having to pay tens of thousands of dollars just to fix the damage that the patient inflicted on his or her own teeth.

So please…don’t try this at home.
